The gladiolus flower gets it’s name from the latin word, Gladius which means, ‘sword’ due to its long, pointed shape. Throughout the reign of the Roman Empire, in the center of the roaring Collosseum, this beautiful flower was awarded to victorious gladiators and was even worn as a source of protection. This is how they came to be the flower of the Gladiator, symbolizing strength, integrity and victory. Evoking the drama, fearlessness and courage of the Roman gladiator. The flower’s sword-like shape further gives it the meaning of infatuation, for it is said that to give the gladiolus is to say, ‘You pierce my heart.’ The Gladiolus also symbolizes never giving up and honor.
