In the height of WWII, French horticulturist Francis Meilland sent his new and most beautiful hybrid rose on the last plane to the United States before the German invasion that would destroy his rose gardens. He wouldn’t find out if the rose had made it to American soil safely until the liberation of France in 1944. It was officially named the Peace Rose on April 29th, 1945. The day that Berlin fell. Upon the announcement of its name at the Pacific Rose Society exhibition in California, two white doves were released. It was a day considered to be a turning point in World War II. Later that year the Peace Rose was given to each of the delegations at the inaugural meeting of the United Nations in San Francisco. With each rose was a note that read: “We hope the ‘Peace’ rose will influence men’s thoughts for everlasting world peace”. It would become the best selling rose of the 20th century.
